The Kano State Government has blamed indiscriminate waste dumping and illegal constructions, warning that firm action will be taken on perpetrators to safeguard lives, property, and the environment.

This was disclosed by the commissioner for environment and climate change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim, following an inspection visit to Kurna and Baban Gwari Roundabout that experienced recent flooding.

“Following the recent heavy rainfall and flooding around Kurna and Baban Gwari Roundabout, I conducted an inspection visit alongside my colleague, the Honorable Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Marwan Ahmad, to assess the situation and uncover the root causes, despite our administration’s ongoing desilting efforts in these areas,” Dr. Hashim stated.

He described the findings as “alarming,” noting that “marketers from Kofar Ruwa Market up to Baban Gwari are indiscriminately dumping waste into water channels, while illegal constructions have severely narrowed these waterways, leading to heavy silting and ultimately, flooding.”

He confirmed that “excavation and desilting works have already commenced in Kurna,” while the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA) “has marked the illegal structures along Baban Gwari for demolition to reclaim these crucial water passages.”

Dr. Hashim added that a detailed report on the findings and current interventions is being compiled for presentation to the Governor.

He issued a stern warning, saying: “Let me be very clear: this administration will not tolerate the reckless dumping of refuse or the erection of illegal structures that endanger lives, property, and our environment.”

The Commissioner called on residents and traders, particularly in the affected areas, to desist from harmful environmental practices. “Rest assured, we will take firm action to safeguard our people and secure our environment,” he emphasized.
